Why won’t anyone work on my E-bike?
If you've been riding around Cleveland trying to find someone to fix your electric bike, you've probably run into a wall. You call a shop, they say they don't work on e-bikes. You try another one — same answer. Maybe you get a "we can look at it but we can't promise anything." Frustrating, right?
You're not imagining it. E-bike repair really is hard to find, and there are actual reasons why most shops won't touch them. At Sixth City Cycles in Old Brooklyn, we work on e-bikes every week — everything from $400 Amazon specials to mid-range riders like Aventon, Himiway, Lectric, Mokwheel, Rad, and Velotric, all the way up to premium builds from Trek, Specialized, Cannondale, and Gazelle — so we figured it was time to explain what's going on and what you can expect when you bring yours in.
… So Why Won't Anyone Fix My E-Bike?
1. E-Bikes Are Two Things at Once
A regular bike is a mechanical puzzle. Cables, gears, brakes, wheels — a good mechanic can diagnose most problems by feel and experience. E-bikes are that plus an electrical system: a motor, a battery, a controller, a display, sensors, and wiring that all have to talk to each other. If something goes wrong, the problem could be mechanical, electrical, or both — and figuring out which one requires a different skill set than most bike shops have invested in.
2. Every Brand Does It Differently
There's no universal e-bike standard. A RadPower has a completely different motor system than a Lectric, which is nothing like an Aventon, which is totally different from a Gazelle. And that's before you get into the sea of no-name bikes flooding in from Amazon and Temu with zero documentation and mystery components. For shops that want predictability — same bikes, same parts, same process every time — e-bikes are a headache they'd rather skip.
3. Parts Can Be Impossible to Find
With established brands, parts are usually available but sometimes slow. With generic or off-brand bikes, you might find that the motor, controller, or display simply doesn't have a replacement part available anywhere. That puts a shop in the uncomfortable position of either turning you away or doing a lot of creative problem-solving with no guarantee of success.
4. Diagnosis Takes Time
With a regular bike, a mechanic can often spot the issue in minutes. E-bike problems can take significantly longer to chase down — especially electrical gremlins that come and go. That time has to be accounted for, which is part of why we require a $30 non-refundable deposit before we start on any e-bike. It gets applied to your final bill when the work is done, but it covers the time we spend figuring out what's actually wrong before we commit to a repair quote.
What We Can Help With
We've worked on a wide range of e-bikes at Sixth City Cycles — budget bikes, mid-range commuters, and premium builds. Here's the kind of stuff we see regularly:
Flat tires and tube replacements — yes, even on e-bikes (though we can't do these on the spot like we can with regular bikes)
Brake adjustments and cable replacements — critical on heavier e-bikes that need reliable stopping power
Drivetrain service — chains, cassettes, and derailleur adjustments
Display and wiring issues — error codes, cutouts, connections
Battery and charging problems — we can assess what's going on, though battery replacements depend on availability for your specific model
Motor issues — diagnosis and assessment; repair or replacement depends on the bike
General tune-ups — even if your e-bike is running fine, regular service keeps it that way
We'll always give you an honest assessment. If your bike has a problem we can't fix — whether that's because of unavailable parts or something outside our scope — we'll tell you straight up rather than take your money and string you along.
What to Bring When You Come In
To help us dig into your e-bike efficiently, please bring:
Your battery — even if you think the issue isn't battery-related
Your keys — if your battery locks to the frame
Your charger — especially for any electrical or charging issues
Any error codes — if your display has been showing a code, take a photo of it before you come in
Walk-ins are always welcome during our open hours, but heads up — we can't do on-the-spot e-bike repairs the way we can with a regular flat tire. Be prepared to leave your bike with us so we can give it the proper attention it needs.
A Note on Cheap vs. Expensive E-Bikes
We're not here to judge what you ride. Whether you picked up a $500 bike on Amazon or spent $3,000 on a quality commuter, you deserve to have it running right. That said, we do want to be upfront: the cheaper and more generic the bike, the harder it can be to source parts if something major needs replacing. We'll always let you know where things stand before we proceed with any work.
If you're in the market for a new e-bike and want something that's actually serviceable long-term, come talk to us. We can point you toward brands that have solid parts availability and aren't going to leave you stranded two years down the road.
